What Is Standing Seam Metal?
Standing seam metal roofing is a series of long, painted-steel panels that lock together with raised ribs. The ribs hide the fasteners and let each panel slide with heat and cold, so seams stay watertight for decades. Panels arrive in sixteen- to twenty-four-inch widths and in gauges from 24 to 22, then run full length from ridge to eave to cut down on lap joints.
A typical Galvalume steel system lasts 40 to 60 years and keeps its color thanks to factory PVDF paint. Panels stay secure in high winds and shrug off hail up to two inches. The smooth surface sheds snow quickly, reducing load on the deck.
Noise in rain is no louder than on a shingle roof when crews install a high-density acoustic underlayment. Lightning poses no extra risk because the roof is already grounded through the deck and framing. Panels meet Class A fire rating and carry a 120-mph uplift approval when attached to a 22-gauge clip system. At the end of life, steel panels recycle into new coil, keeping waste out of landfills.
Most low-slope commercial roofs at 3:12 pitch or greater qualify for standing seam, and many dry roofs can be re-covered by adding a new clip grid over old decking. The concealed ribs accept clamp-on brackets for solar arrays, walkway grating, and snow guards without piercing the metal. Annual bolt checks and an easy hose wash keep the finish bright.
Why Choose Standing Seam
Tough Finish, Cool Paint, Solar Ready.
Half-century Lifespan
Factory-painted steel panels last forty to sixty years with minimal upkeep.
Leak-free Ribs
Concealed clips and tall seams keep fasteners above water flow, blocking leaks.
Hail and Wind Strength
Tested to two-inch hail and 120 mph wind uplift for peace of mind in storms.
Cool Roof Coatings
PVDF paint reflects heat and can lower summer HVAC use by fifteen percent.
Solar-ready Design
Clamp brackets grab ribs without drilling holes, making panel installs quick.
Fully Recyclable
Steel panels and clips recycle into new coil, cutting landfill waste and earning green points.
Installation Paths
Choose the Best Seam for Your Roof.
- Snap-Lock Panels
Male and female ribs snap together with hand pressure.
-
Best for: pitches above 3:12 on warehouses and retail strips.
-
Strengths: fastest labor, no seaming machine on site.
-
Trade-offs: lower wind rating than double-lock systems.
-
- Mechanical Double-Lock (180°)
Crews fold each rib twice with a seamer for a full 180° lock.
-
Best for: high-rise, coastal, or hurricane-prone zones.
-
Strengths: top wind resistance and watertightness.
-
Trade-offs: slower install and higher labor cost.
-
- Batten Cap Panels
Flat pans clip to the deck, then a cap snaps over tall clips.
-
Best for: long runs on schools or churches wanting a bold rib look.
-
Strengths: handles thermal movement over very long panel lengths.
-
Trade-offs: slightly higher profile may catch drifting snow.
-
- Structural T-Seam
Panel legs fold into a T-shaped rib that locks without clips.
-
Best for: metal-building frames where purlins are exposed.
-
Strengths: no clip cost and quick factory-run panels.
-
Trade-offs: requires heavier 22-gauge steel for strength.
